A winter scene in the Dales. Looking towards Ingleborough from Sulber Nick. Climbs of Ingleborough start from Horton or Ribblehead. We run these walks throughout the year.

Wharton Hall in the valley visited on walks from Kirkby Stephen. A favourite venue for many easier walks.

The morning after the "Great Storm" dawned bright, dry and calm but revealed the fury of the previous day - a field visible from the Falcon Hotel had been turned into a lake and the car park was littered with branches, fortunately missing any cars. A group of hardy soles who had braved the conditions, both the night before and the following morning, gathered in the small bar of the Falcon for a briefing from the chairman, to decide what to do. Dave Reed volunteered to lead a party over the fells, Joyce Broughton , a "keeping to the road and out of the water" meander and four ladies ("not on bicycles") decided to do "their own thing"
Joyce's group of six set off from Settle by a back lane, with water pouring out walls, towards Langcliffe, but flood water soon proved impassable. Undaunted, our intrepid leader, rather than retrace our steps back to Settle, decided to indulge in a little fearless trespass!!! Unfortunately the best laid plans oft go astray and passing through a farmyard we were quietly informed there was no right of way. Ever the diplomat, Joyce turned on the charm, pleading the extreme weather and that no self respecting DailsRailer would ever do such a thing in normal circumstances, etc., etc. The force of Joyce's advocacy was such, that with tears in her eyes, the farmer's wife actually opened the gate for us!
A planned coffee stop in the Watershed Mill Café was abandoned as when we arrived the staff were busy pouring buckets of water out of the front door! The path leading up from the river to Stainforth Lane was completely full of fast flowing flood water, but was safely negotiated albeit having to cling on to the wall.
The walk along the lane was an absolute delight, with shafts of sunlight breaking through the clouds and "spotlighting" the fields and fells. Lunch was taken by Stainforth Force, an awe inspiring sight in full spate.
The return journey followed much the same route, less any trespassing, and feet were rested and parched throats quenched in the Golden Lion after a most enjoyable meander, many thanks to Joyce.

7 May 2005 - Ribblehead Celebration 30th Anniversary of Dales Rail

Approximately 100 people enjoyed a series of walks from Ribblehead station today to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Dales Rail (see the news page for further details). The weather was kind to us for most of the day and the Dales scenery was enjoyed at its best. Most people headed for the Station Inn after the walks to enjoy either a drink or two or the excellent celebration buffet. A couple of short speeches were made by our chairman, David Sherborne and Colin Speakman, one of the originators of the Dales Rail train. These reminded us of the history of Dales Rail and how lucky we are to be able to enjoy the Dales by public transport. This just left time for a visit to the Dales Rail exhibition of past and present memorabilia at the station visitor centre followed by the train home.

Thanks to Joyce Broughton and all others who helped in the organisation of the day, including the walks leaders and the strong support for the event shown by Friends of DalesRail members.

17 December 2005 - Skipton Circular via Lothersdale

24 bodies off on 10 miles moderate in good weather well protected against the cold and in good heart. A steady walk across fields to Carlton, A walkers champing at the bit, through the village up a long steady climb on paths I have not used before, turning round one had a panoramic view of Skipton, Sharp Haw, Rough Haw and way up to Inglborough and beyond. A short stop for elevenses and passing round of biscuits (chocolate) a few jovial comments and we were off. Still climbing steadily with a good view of Pen-y-ghent and Ingleborough behind us, we then turned left descending to Lothersdale, (guess what) we turned right and climbed out of Lothersdale.

Lunch was taken after a short climb, wait a minute what's this? Smoke rising from a body lying flat on the ground, have heard of internal combustion but never seen it, could someone have lit a fire to stay warm, no its only Penny S---- having a drag. Forward on to the moor turning right heading towards Elslack (some of these names) turning right again towards Carlton, one of the group having a problem with a knee, on reaching Carlton our friend Gordon arranged a lift to Skipton for our wounded walker. The rest of us continued on over the river and back to Skipton.

A good walk on some new paths good weather good company led by John Gramshaw and backed up by Derek Little or Little Derek thanks to you both.
